Newport, Rhode Island, United States
Just because it's winter doesn't mean you have to stay in with Netflix all season. The off season is the perfect time to find some tranquility and explore, without summer crowds. We took a weekend trip to Newport, RI, and it was a much-needed escape from the city.
Of course, don't expect to find things in full swing. Three of Newport's storied mansions are open in the winter, and we made it to two: the Breakers and the Marble House. Both were summer "cottages" once owned by members of the Vanderbilt family, and reflect the splendor of the Gilded Age.
Newport itself offers beautiful ocean views, lush lawns and sprawling mansions everywhere you turn. The food didn't disappoint, either. We stopped at a cute eatery called Winner Winner and indulged in fried chicken sandwiches and mac & cheese. Just don't forget to bundle up!
